The following illustration shows the wiring and component configuration used to power low voltage LED strip
lights with the ability to dim the LED strips using a traditional wall-dimmer. This is a great setup for residential
and commercial installations where a clean, elegant and user-friendly LED strip light installation is desired.
LED strip lights operate on low voltage DC (the 24 volt variant is shown below), but wall-dimmers are installed in standard line voltage
circuits which operate at AC 120 volts (North America / Japan) or 220-240 volts (elsewhere).
Two things must happen for the LED strip lights to work on the dimmer circuit. First, the voltage must be reduced
and rectified from the AC line voltage to the lower DC voltage appropriate for the LED strip lights. Second, the
dimming signal generated by the wall-dimmer must be interpreted and converted to the corresponding
brightness setting on the low voltage DC side.
Waveform Lighting's dimmable power supply units offer the combined functionality of voltage transformation as
well as dimming signal conversion and is an essential component in this setup.
